PJ Masks: What are they, what toys are available and will your children enjoy them?

There’s a new kid’s cartoon on Disney Junior that’s proving very popular: PJ Masks.

It’s unusual because it’s a super hero adventure where the heroes are children rather than adults.

Kids love Spider-man, Hulk and other Marvel or DC heroes, just listen to any playground game. So it’s a refreshing change for them to picture themselves as strong and having super powers rather than being saved by heroic grownups.

The PJ Masks show has had a series of video-games, toys and merchandise last year. This year, though, the lines are being expanded and some of the new toys on offer use some clever tech to help kids play.

Along with a new big Rival Racers Track playset that combines jumps, plungers and articulated characters are a series of large villain figurines from the show.

These big-figs include some intelligent use of button activated electronic voices. Using the same voice talent as on the cartoon they each offer a number of dastardly statements.

Villainous laughter and taunts and paired with phrases like “you foiled my plan this time” and “I’ll be back”. See children play with these and the different sounds soon create a variety of imaginative adventures.

Also new this year are the Transforming playsets which magically change the everyday school children of the show into their super hero counter part — all at the press of a button.

It’s a simple magic trick with revolving panels but it works well and again extends the on-screen fun to the living room floor. While the PJ Masks toys aren’t out until later in the year — and aren’t the cheapest toys on the shelves — in terms of quality and play value they are spot on.

We had the collection sent to test out in our family and the kids have enjoyed the new additions to their toy box.

The PJ Masks games have also been updated over the last few months. Most recently a PJ Masks drawing game and PJ Masks Sound Board web app .

There have also been new PJ Masks episodes added to the Disney Junior app. These combine a narrative cartoon with playable sections — a little like Dragon’s Lair in the 90’s.

Finally, in the App Store, we have Moonlight Heroes , Starlight Sprint and Super City Run .

Whether you want to watch the show, create your own toy adventures or extend the fun to your tablet screens, PJ Masks look set to extend their popularity this year.
