If You Want To Dodge Summer Pests, These Scents That Repel Bugs Mosquitoes

From the months of June to September, I’m pretty much covered in bites, which is why scents that repel bugs and mosquitoes is part of my summer must-haves, along with sunscreen, a good facial mist, and hell, a good deodorant too.  I love me some summertime, but the biggest downside has to be mosquitoes.

When that summer solstice hits, there are just a few products and items you have to have in your bag at all times. Makeup wipes, oil pads, and general tissues are always in my summer pouch, cause you never know when that 90-degree weather will have you begging for mercy.

Since the weather is always so beautiful in the summer, it means more time spent outside. More barbecues, picnics, rooftop parties, beaching, pooling, and generally, more sun. While I’m all about eating and boozing outside, once the sun sets, the mosquitoes and bugs have their heyday. If that isn’t enough, mosquitos take a great liking to me. Why exactly? I’ll never know, but I do know that repellent is one of my best friends in the summertime.

Spreading on calamine lotion and icing these bites aren’t exactly my favorite thing, so I’m always on the side of prevention to get these buggers out of my way. So how do you make sure they stay away from you? These scents, of course.

1. Lavender

Lavender evidently keeps bugs away, so you can grow it in your house, or wear a perfume or body oil that’s got some lavender scents in it. Great news, since it smells amazing.

2. Peppermint

Bugs hate peppermint. Best way to get them off? Crush up the leaves and rub them on your body. Plus, you’ll smell super fresh.

3. Citronella

Citronella is probably the most famous bug repeller, but beware, it may irritate your skin. But this scent will definitely repel those annoying mosquitos.

4. Rosemary

Did you know these keep the bugs away, too? If you’re grilling, throw them on your food for extra taste and repellent, all at the same time. Or, DIY a rosemary scent to wear on yourself.

5. Garlic

Eating lots of garlic can actually create a sort of barrier on your skin that’ll repel the mosquitos away.

6. Neem Oil

Organic Neem Oil, $27, Kama Aryuveda

It’s natural, and it keeps the bugs away. Rub a little on your skin before an outdoor event.

7. Basil

Effective when it’s grown in your garden and when you extract the oil from it.

8. Lemongrass

Lemongrass contains citronella, so it naturally keeps the buggers away.

9. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is known to repel all sorts of bugs, like mosquitoes and ticks.

10. Bergamot

This beauty repels mosquitos effectively, but be warned by this one, too. It can irritate the skin, so make sure to dilute it with water.

11. Bombshell

Victoria’s Secret Bombshell Eau de Parfum, $52, victoriassecret.com

Apparently, this Victoria’s Secret perfume can repel bugs. Yep, you read that right.

If you’re on a mission like me to avoid bites, these scents will totally save you. Do some research and google how to incorporate these natural scents into your everyday life this summer, and watch how drastically your life changes. I love me some outdoor time, but I also love me some itch-free summers.
