During a meet-and-greet after one of Cox’s college lectures, the actress was approached by a 7-year-old fan. “Her parents were there and they said, ‘Our daughter’s trans and we drove nine hours to see you,'” Cox recalls. “[Her mom] was like, ‘When we found out our child was trans, we wanted to provide her with as many affirming representations of what it means to be trans.'”
Since Laverne Cox began playing Sophia Burset on Orange Is the New Black, she’s been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to the character. But one run-in with a young fan holds a particular spot in her heart.
And Cox, who also is a vocal activist and advocate for trans issues, doesn’t take her responsibilities as a role model lightly. “I’ve heard so many people say they’ve transitioned because of me, because of this character that I play on Orange Is the New Black. So thank you, everybody,” Cox tells her fans in the video above.
Orange Is the New Black returns Friday, June 17 on Netflix.
