Andy Holt, Tennessee State Republican lawmaker, says that he is “sick and tired of the media and liberal politicians attacking our right to keep and bear arms” and he will not change the jackpot at ‘ Holt’s Hog Fest and Turkey Shoot ‘. An American politician has defended his decision to give away two semi-automatic rifles as prizes at an upcoming fundraising event, saying that he may give out “extra firearms… to ensure people can protect themselves”.

Mr Holt says that the giveaway of two AR-15 semi-automatic guns as a door prize was planned ‘weeks before’ the Orlando attacks where Omar Mateen killed 49 people at a gay nightclub with what some reported was an ‘AR-15 assault rifle’.

He added on Facebook : “I’ll do everything I can to ensure the Second Amendment is protected and people are equipped to exercise their innate right to self-defense [sic].”

As well as the prize of guns, the fundraiser on June 25 includes a petting zoo, hay rides, barbecue, and a turkey shoot. Tickets cost £21 per person, with a £17.60 charge for those who want to take part in the shoot – as long as they bring their own gun and ammunition.

Mr Holt has reacted against the reports about his giveaway: “The Orlando terrorist didn’t use an AR-1… I’m furious that I get phone calls from the media asking me if I’m still going to give away an AR-15 at our HogFest, rather than asking me how many extra firearms I’ll be handing out to ensure people can protect themselves. After all, it was a bullet that stopped the terrorist.”

He asked for his followers to “pray for the victims and their families [as]… while I am a conservative Christian, my heart literally breaks for these women and men on so many levels.”

He later added: “Dear media, you want to know if I’m still giving away an AR-15? You bet the farm I am.”

According to the New York Times, Mateen used an AR-15-type semi-automatic rifle in addition to a 9mm handgun.

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

It was written into the Constitution in 1791 after being ratified by Congress under George Washington, the first president of the United States.

Despite alleging that he has received death threats from a ‘Democrat activist’, Mr Holt’s fundraiser in Dresden, Tennessee is set to go ahead as planned.

He added yesterday that he’s not frightened of the threats “seeing as how we’ve got our shotgun rifles, four-wheel drive, and know how to survive”.
