The updates work through Direct Messages (DMs) on Twitter , so you will get a notification on your mobile phone lock screen whenever a goal is scored, as well as at kick-off and full time. Twitter has launched a new service that will provide football fans with real-time goal alerts during the Euro 2016 tournament – just in time for the England v Wales match.
The service will be available throughout the group stages of Euro 2016, right through to the knockout round.
“The immediacy of Twitter makes it a really useful tool for England fans to keep up-to-date with key moments in matches when they are otherwise unable to do so,” said Mark Gilbert, head of digital communications at the FA.
“We’re confident offering fans goal alerts via direct messages over the platform will go down well with our followers and we’re pleased we can partner with Twitter to do this during Euro 2016.”
If you want to get live goal alerts from Twitter, here’s what you need to do:
- Follow @England on Twitter
- Go into the “Messages” tab
- Compose a DM to @England with just the word “play”
- You will get a message back confirming you’re enrolled
That’s it. From that point onwards you will continue to receive live updates for every England match throughout the tournament.
The service is also available for five other Euro 2016 competing nations including Wales (@FAWales), Northern Ireland (@NorthernIreland), France (@equipedefrance), Spain (@sefutbol), Germany (@TwitterSportDE).
If you want to opt out, information on how to do so is also available through DM.
The launch of the new service follows a successful pilot with @SouthamptonFC in the Premier League last season.
Twitter said that some fans would rather not receive every update throughout the game, so this new service is designed to keep them informed of the moments that matter.
The England vs Wales Euro 2016 match takes place tomorrow, June 16, at 14:00 BST. You can read Mirror Online’s preview of the match here .
