X-Men: Apocalypse has been widely released in theaters, and fans are finally able to feast their eyes upon the epic battle between the X-Men and Apocalypse and his horsemen. One of the more captivating aspects of Apocalypse is seeing beloved characters in their younger incarnations, with a new Cyclops, Jean, Storm, and Nightcrawler joining the fray. But now the question for future installments is, will we ever see the original cast again? After months and months of waiting and anticipation, the day is finally upon us.
Bryan Singer recently opened up to fandango, where he answered that question with:
I hope so. The night we had a little screening for the cast, I went and saw Patrick Stewart’s wife sing at a local venue with Ian McKellen. The two of us were sitting there watching Patrick’s lovely wife sing — she has a great voice — and I was thinking, yeah, at some point it would be lovely to see them all again. They’re all great actors and great people, and I had great experiences with them. I’d love to see that happen — it’s just you have to figure it out. How do you do that? You can’t do it for the sake of doing it — you have to do it right. Or else it’s just one of those cobbled-together things.
While it doesn’t appear that there are any solid plans to bring back the original band of mutants, it certainly appears that Bryan Singer is more than open to have a reprisal occur.
Of course, the main obstacle stopping the likes of Famke Janssen, Patrick Stewart, and company from returning to the X-Men franchise is the issue of timelines. We last saw the original cast at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, where it was revealed that Logan successfully changed the world, and Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique did not kill Trask and get captured. Wolverine woke up to see the the full cast from the original trilogy assembled, alive, and well.
So how the hell could the original cast come back into play? To start, there could be a future installment which refocuses back on the original timeline and characters; surely the happy ending from Days of Future Past didn’t last forever. After having the first class star in the last three films, it might be refreshing to return to the OG mutants. The first class actors could even be used in previously unseen flashback sequences, essentially reversing the balance of screen time from what we saw in Days of Future Past.
Then again, they could go with the tried and true practice of time travel. There are a ton of unused stories from the comics which involve more outrageous concepts like time travel and the mutants battling in space. While Cable seems to be Deadpool’s property, Bishop could always show up and cause some chaos. He was essentially a seat filler in his last live-action incarnation, so it would be nice to see the character more fleshed out in a future installment. Plus, who doesn’t love time travel?
What do you folks think? Should X-Men bring back the original cast, or stick with the new cast of characters? Sound off in the comments below.
